# git blame will read .git-blame-ignore-revs on its own

Oct 28, 2026

Starting with Git 2.98 (expected around December 2026), `git blame` automatically skips the commits listed in a repo’s `.git-blame-ignore-revs` file. No more setting it up in every clone ([commit](https://github.com/git/git/commit/52890fcfd41dc90c513ea375c146a54ff5f9d277), via [Sam Saccone](https://x.com/samccone/status/2115085101747097984)).

```sh
# .git-blame-ignore-revs
# Run Prettier on everything
3f2a9c1e8b7d6a5f4e3d2c1b0a9f8e7d6c5b4a39
```

The file lists formatting and big refactor commits, so blame credits each line to the last commit that really changed it. [GitHub’s blame view](https://docs.github.com/en/repositories/working-with-files/using-files/viewing-and-understanding-files) already uses it automatically. Until Git 2.98, turn it on once in each clone:

```sh
git config blame.ignoreRevsFile .git-blame-ignore-revs
```
